The name Wright is derived from the Old English 'wyrhta' meaning 'worker' or more specifically 'woodworker', carpenter', 'craftsman'. The border lands on the Scottish/English border were home to this notable surname, and the name is belived to be descended from the Boernicians, the ancient race that inhabited this area. The name Wright was found in Berwickshire. However, they were first settled in Plowland in Holderness, later moving north into Durham where they were settled at Bradbury and Sedgefield, Northumberland and Berwick. Their estates in Yorkshire were at Bolton-upon-Swale, Botton Hall, and Sigglesthorn Hall. Branches of the family also acquired Brattleby in Lincoln, and estates in Mottram and Bickley in Cheshire. Further north, Thomas Wright of Alnwick was prominent, and the Wrights of Aberdeen were recorded in 1342.
