Our UK based shop has been selling Family Crests online since 1996. We do not undertake the research; instead we have a licence from the world’s largest heraldic research company whose staff have been compiling a database of family crests and surname histories since the early 1970s. So far the database holds around one million images and 700,000 surname histories. Research is ongoing with new names being added each year.
Your family crest is available printed on mottled manuscript paper (framed or unframed), as a digital image (sent to you attached to an email), hand-painted onto a hardwood shield, or we glaze family crests onto a pint-size bone china tankard, a plate or coffee mug.
What Is A Family Crest?
Also known as Coats of Arms, these became a necessity when knights and noblemen went into battle wearing a suit of armour. You’ve seen them in films, dressed in all that armour it wasn’t possible to tell who was who! Each noblemen usually took with him his own men, a sort of private army. The men needed to easily recognise their leader, so the custom arose to paint crests on shields and on cloth garments known as ‘surcoats’. This later term was corrupted over time and became ‘coats of arms’.
Is My Family Crest Copyrighted?
No. The ones we sell are many hundreds of years old and any copyright died ages ago. There are some that people have recently created by the College of Arms and the bearers have sole right to those; so we do not sell them.
Is My Family Crest Genuine?
Yes. There is a list of some of the ancient books and documents used by our researchers on the ‘Bibliography’ page.
